During this stall holder interview, Farooq from the Leather Research Center, Karachi, shared insights into their innovative work on exotic and bio-based leather products.
At the stall, a range of creative materials were showcased, including ostrich leather and fish skin leather, processed into high-quality leather with unique textures and finishes. These materials are designed for use in the fashion, footwear, and accessories industry, offering both durability and visual appeal.
Farooq explained that while the production process is technical, the raw material cost is lower than conventional leather, allowing manufacturers to create premium, high-value products once finished. Fish skin leather, for example, can be used in sandals, straps, and fashion accessories, where its natural texture adds a distinctive look.
Another standout innovation was leather developed from chicken feet, a waste byproduct. Through careful processing, this bio-material can be transformed into usable leather for wallets, interiors, and design elements, adding sustainability to fashion manufacturing.
The stall also featured machine embossing on leather, inspired by textile embossing techniques, opening new design possibilities and customization options for the leather industry.
This interview highlighted how research, innovation, and sustainability are shaping the future of leather products in Pakistan.
